Affiliate Marketing Rocks! - What is affiliate marketing?

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing, in a nutshell, is a marketing practice which is primarily Internet-based.  Typically the affiliate of a company directs web users to the company's web site on which they may choose to purchase products or services.  The user may also submit contact information in order to be contacted by the company about the products or services it may provide for free or for a price.   The affiliate is then paid on a per-sale or per-lead basis.   The sale model is, in most cases, a percentage of the actual sale completed on the company's website or a flat dollar amount for the sale.

Why do companies have affiliate programs?

One of the main reasons companies have affiliate programs is the reduction in overhead that its affiliate program provides.  The company does not have to staff in-house sales associates, pay for benefits, nor supply any physical materials in order to have its product(s) or service(s) marketed.

How does affiliate marketing work?

Check out this video from popular affiliate marketing author and consultant Rosalind Gardner who sums up affiliate marketing in a nutshell.   She is also the author of the excellent ebook  "The Super Affiliate Handbook"  in which she tells how she earns over $500,000 a year via affiliate marketing.
